Double Lines - Cornelis Berentsz Sleght

Cornelis Barentsz Sleght was born in 1616 in Woerden, Reeuwijk, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands to Barent Cornelis Sleght and Jaquemine Pietrtgen. In Woerden he was listed as a distiller and a brandy wine maker after taking over his fathers lands in 1640.  In 1645, he expanded his lands u 'One Morgan and 47 Rods" (or about 2 1/2 acres.)

Around 1635 Cornelis married Trijntgen "Tryntje" Bosch (Boz) but we do not have a clear record of this.  They had at least five children together - Heydnerick, Jan, Jaquemijne, Annetgen, Petronella, and Mattijs.

The last mention of Cornelis and Tryntie in Woerden was in March 17, 1653, where he gave power of attorney to Jan Corsz Rietvelt, where they sold what possetions they had and those left over of her parents' estate.  They were clearly planning to Emigrate.

The family arrived in New York, then being called new Amsterdam, where Cornelis was named as the brewer.  The family lived in Esopus, later named Kingston, where he was recorded on May 31, 1658. He was the bailiff in 1661, stood for nomination in 1664, 1666, and 1671 and was again named in 1671. After the English took over, Sleght was one of the insurrectionists with a sword and weapons. On Feb. 16, 1666, he was seriously wounded by a small detachment of English soldiers. He was to be banised for three years, but was exonerated as defending himself.  It is possible he went to Flushing, where he bought land in 1669 that he sold three years later.

Death records are unclear, but many cite Cornelis as passing away 5 Nov 1697, and Tryntje 26 Sep 1684.  Some show Cornelis marrying Elsjie Jans, a widow of Hendrerick Schoonmaker.

Many people are descended from this large first family, and if you're interested you can view much of the record tree here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Slecht_Ancestry

Speaking of being related.... when I was adding the information of daughter Petronella (who married a Schoonmaker) a person possibility popped up while I was adding her in, which ancestry does to make sure you don't double add the same person. I clicked on the Sleght person who populated, and it was in my husbands line.  I spent all afternoon going forwards and backwards down the lines, and eventually came right back here, to Cornelis and Tryntje; My 11th great grandparents, as well as my husbands 10th great grandparents. Yep, we are both direct descendants from this same couple! My Wheeler line follows through their daughter Petronella, and my husbands Woolsey line follows through their son, Heyndereck.  Which technically makes us 11th cousins once removed XD
